Biruni Institute attends Roundtable Discussions on SDGs, hosted by GoA and UNDP

A week-long Expert Roundtable Discussions on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was co-hosted by the Government of Afghanistan and the UNDP in the week of July 27, 2019.

Dr. Omar Joya, Head of Research, and Nazir Kabiri, Executive Director, attended the meetings on behalf of the Biruni Institute.

The Roundtable Discussions brought together the leadership of a number of key Government ministries, namely Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Public Health, on how to transform the war economy in Afghanistan to a peace economy by investing on Sustainable Development Goals. The Roundtable provided a unique opportunity for SDG stakeholders and Government ministries to exchange views on a programmatic approach to SDGs in Afghanistan, including using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to assess interdependencies and trade-offs for SDG indicators.

Welcoming this initiative by the UNDP, the Biruni Institute will work with the relevant counterparts in designing an integrative modeling approach that will be introduced in Afghanistan, within the framework provided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to help the Government of Afghanistan support peace and development across the country.
