OUR VISION

The Biruni Institute seeks to be a center of excellence that is a catalyst for thoughts, ideas, and solutions to Afghanistan’s economic development and its integration with the region.

OUR MISSION

The Biruni Institute is committed to better inform policy making in Afghanistan by producing evidence-based and high-quality research on socio-economic challenges, create an environment for open dialogue on policy issues, and advocate for effective implementation of policies and programs to positively impact the lives of Afghan citizens.

The Institute aims to indigenize policy dialogue and economic thinking to find solutions that are best tailored to local circumstances in Afghanistan. We believe that native perspectives in the design of policies are critical for their effectiveness and success.

We do this by undertaking rigorous research in applied economics, and promoting public awareness in economic policy and thinking. We believe engaging with the public, particularly with the young generation of students and professionals, in contemporary economic issues is critical in stimulating a productive national debate, which can eventually help improve policy decisions through a positive engagement between the Government, the Civil Society, and the people.

MANDATE

To achieve our mission, we will:

  • Undertake independent, evidence-based and high-quality research in economics to inform sound and strategic policy decisions that confront the government, the private sector, and the development partners in Afghanistan;
  • Convene a forum for dialogue and information sharing to find solutions for better implementation of policies and programs;
  • Produce innovative knowledge products and encourage research by local experts to support economic analyses, policymaking and empirical research in Afghanistan;
  • Convene conferences, seminars, and peer-learning events to enhance knowledge sharing, disseminate research findings, increase public awareness on contemporary economic issues, strengthen the debate between civil society, media, and the Government, and to reinforce civil society’s role in influencing economic policy decisions.

STRATEGIC GOALS

The strategic goals that shape and influence our work and approach are to:

  • Catalyze the transition towards sustainable and equitable development in Afghanistan;
  • Serve as a forum for policy dialogue, source of expertise, and advisory services for the Government, private sector, and international institutions;
  • Serve as a base for regional advocacy, networking and a conduit for North-South dialogue and South-South and Triangular Cooperation;
  • Serve as a major academic hub/society for scholars, economists, development analysts, and visiting researchers; and
  • Serve as a professional membership organization for private businesses, professionals, and entrepreneurs to provide independent research and third-party assessment on policies and challenges that affect the private sector in Afghanistan.
