Dr. Lutfi Rahimi, Head of Research of the Biruni Institute discussed economic connectivity and cooperation between South Asia and Central sub-regions. The talk was hosted by the Center for Afghanistan Studies at the University of Nebraska Omaha. The full discussion can be watched here.
Dr. Rahimi highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and greater openness between the regions in raising standards of living and achieving prosperity for the inhabitants of this region. The disconnect between the two sub-regions has a high economic cost that needs to be eliminated. Afghanistan is the shortest route connecting the two sub-region which makes its geopolitical position crucial in achieving greater openness and connecting the region.
Discussing this, Dr. Rahimi pointed out that while its important to have a greater vision such as Afghanistan being the roundabout of the region and becoming the transit hub, as it is entertained for several years now. However, leaders and policymakers in Afghanistan must also be cautious of the country’s ability (both economically and politically) in achieving this vision.
He suggested that Afghanistan needs to start with baby-steps and get its bilateral affairs with neighboring countries (especially Pakistan and Iran) in order before embarking upon a regional goal. For instance, Afghanistan doesn’t have a trade agreement with Pakistan which is its largest trading partner.
