Executive Director addresses a forum on the Potential of “Regional Cooperation”

New Delhi, India.

This Regional Policy Dialogue held in New Delhi was aimed to explore opportunities and challenges before South Asia to strengthen regional cooperation and develop an action agenda to support the implementation of the 2030 Development Agenda through a broader development coalition and partnership in the region.

Sharing prospective from Afghanistan, Nazir Kabiri, Executive Director of the Biruni Institute said that in terms of the opportunities, Afghanistan has been successful from a process point of view putting in place the right institutional arrangements for coordinating SDGS at the country level. But moving on into the implementation decade (2020-2030), Afghanistan is faced with serious fiscal constraints and slow growth rate – currently standing at an average rate of 2 percent.

“Afghanistan is being denied trade access to India which is the biggest regional market and traditionally the largest buyer of Afghanistan’s exports”. Without access to trade, Afghanistan will be left behind, Mr. Kabiri concluded.
